The northernmost villages on serene Hood Canal are Brinnon and Quilcene. They welcome you to their shellfish-rich tidal basins and endless mountain trails into the Olympics. This twenty-mile stretch of scenic Highway 101 boasts thirteen campgrounds, seven lakes, three major rivers, and innumerable boating, fishing, hiking, trail-riding, cross-country skiing, bird watching, snow-mobiling and sight-seeing opportunities. And only about 3000 residents.
Quilcene is home to the largest oyster hatcheries in the world and is reputed to have the purest, most pristine salt water in the west. A visit to the Quilcene Ranger Station will provide shellfishing, camping, hiking and backpacking information. The loveliest waterfalls - Dosewallips, Rocky Brook and Falls View - are all within a half hour drive of either village, both of which have grocery stores, service stations, fine restaurants, accommodations, fishing license dealers, liquor stores, and most of the amenities of civilization. The Olympic Music Festival's concerts in the Mule Barn offer sublime weekend performances by the Philadelphia String Quartet. These are open to the public all summer from June through August. The Greater Quilcene/Brinnon Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to the northernmost gateway to the recreational abundance of Hood Canal and the Olympics. |
